Why are looks SOOO important as a non-verbal way of communicating everywhere, including the workplace?

Welcome to my blog, in this space I will share with you some of the most important information about physical appearance, attires and workplace fashion.

First of all, it is very important to understand that the way you look tells much more about you than you may imagine. Looks are important from little things, such as who to approach to in a party, to whether you should get that promotion you have been craving for months.

People usually takes between two to 10 seconds to form an opinion on anything, mostly based on appearance. According to Tanja Lewis, people can judge other’s people health, personality and professionalism by personal appearance, therefore a very good first impression is invaluable.

Usually, employees interact with customers and the looks, behaviour and communication of the employees often reflects the company image. This is why employers prefer staff with a high sense of personal hygiene and who keep a professional appearance at all times.

The following Remploy’s video (Remploytv, 2015) can highlight the importance of personal appearance and looks in the workplace:

There are many categories of communication in the workplace, one of them is the non-verbal communications, and within this category we can find the appearance of people. Although it is becoming more common to overlook the way people dress themselves, there are still lots of people that do not give the proper attention to the way they look, their clothing, grooming, posture and personal hygiene.

The Business Communication Process & Product states that “Based on what they see, viewers make quick judgements about your status, credibility, personality, and potential.” (Guffey, Loewy, Rhodes & Rogin, 2015). I could not agree more, besides there are lots of tiny details that can add up lots of points or become a downer in your way up to success, some of them are grooming (trimmed haircut and clean shave), body cleanliness (Brushing tooth, fresh breath, washing hands, taking a bath, using deodorant), polished shoes, clean clothes, and clean nails.

Always dress up for the position you dream to land on, in my Business School we used to say: “Dress always as if you were the CEO”, remember that you are always been observed therefore to finish with this post I will give you my Top 5 Tip list to shine all the time:

  • Your appearance is a reflection of who you are, market yourself the best you can.
  • Keep always mints or gum to maintain a fresh breath.
  • Smile, warm smiles can take you to high places.
  • Try to keep a good posture, this will always reflect well on you as a healthy and confident person.
  • Always take a last look at the mirror before leaving for work so you can fix those little details.
I would like to know which additional tips you could add to my list. Feel free to make any comments and tell me about your experiences; I would love to hear about yourselves and your experience at work.

PS: these two videos I’m sharing explain in a quick manner why should you dress well
